Monsoon is a season that gives us a welcome change from high temperatures of the summer but it also is a season that virus, bacteria and allergens find very comfortable. Time and again one finds children suffering from upper respiratory tract infections- cold, cough, sneezes and sometimes even fever. “How do I build my child’s immunity” is a question I get asked very often. Well the answer lies in consistent consumption of immunity building foods from the Indian kitchen:

Adrak (Ginger): It inhibits the growth of bacteria and lowers infection rate. It can be grated and given with honey or even boiled and consumed as ginger water.

Haldi (Turmeric): This is the nutrient that boosts immunity , has anti-viral, anti-fungal, anti bacterial and even anti-inflammatory properties. However , remember turmeric itself will be effective only if it is absorbed by the human body. Thus it has to be combined with foods that have quercetin in it . These include citrus fruits (recommended also because of Vitamin C component), onion and garlic. Heating turmeric also speeds up its absorption.

Amla (Indian Gooseberry): Extremely rich in Vitamin C, this is also a wonder nutrient that helps improve body’s defence against the cold virus .

Pudina (mint): This kills bacteria and virus. It has a calming effect on the body

Kali Mirch (black pepper): This is famous for providing relief from sinusitis, and nasal congestion.

Remember immunity is never built overnight. It may take several weeks before the consumption of immunity building foods shows results. The foods have to be taken on a regular and consistent basis (daily) to have an impact.
