Let your food be full of disease fighting nutrients . Welcome the rains with a healthy diet

Monsoons bring relief from the hot scorching days of May and June, but remember that rain brings with it a bundle of illnesses as well. As we know that in India, come rains and the sewage pipes start overflowing and contaminate the drinking water supply leading to gastrointestinal ailments, typhoid, jaundice and the deadly hepatitis. All kids of bacteria, viruses and fungi grow and multiply in this high level of humidity. Allergic rhinitis and bronchial asthma and other respiratory problems get aggravated. Every third person is complaining of viral or flu. If you eat a well-balanced nutritious diet, be sure that you will be in a better state of health to fight infections.

Tips to remain healthy

  • Hydration: Its hot, sultry and humidity during the monsoons. One tends to perspire a lot, so keep yourself sufficiently hydrated by consuming refreshing and healthy drinks- about 6-8 glasses of water every day. Boil or use RO water- coconut water, vegetable juices, mintade, lemonade.

  • Boost your metabolism: Your energy levels slacken in the heat, so eat and drink healthy to boost your metabolism. Consume nutritious soups full of vegetables and cooked at home. These will provide you with phytochemicals and anti-oxidants to build your immunity.

  • Go herbal: Hot coffee and tea are stimulating and at the same time relax you but take only 2 cups a day as caffeine is dehydrating. Herbal teas are very good options that can be had either chilled or warm. They fight disease-causing microbes. Basil (Tulsi) leaves, ginger with cinnamon and cardamom with lemon and honey are excellent.

  • Enhance your immunity: Amla and ginger juice with a pinch of turmeric and honey (all taken together) in the mornings helps to build immunity. Condiments like Asafetida (Hing), turmeric (haldi), cumin (zeera) seeds, ajwain improve immunity and aid digestion. Garlic is a wonder food. It helps fights virus and bacteria and is also good for avoiding cancer. . Fruits can give instant energy- so must be consumed in abundance- bananas, papayas are a good source of vitamin K and many minerals and vitamins. Mangoes have lots of fiber and B carotene which help develop the immune systems

  • Maintain proper hygiene- vegetables and fruits should be thoroughly washed in potable safe water to do away with worms, their larvae and dirt.

  • Precautions while eating out: As far as possible eat freshly cooked food. While eating out avoid cold foods like cold cuts of meat, curd, salads and cold milk based desserts.

  • Take suitable combination of carbs, fats and proteins:. Avoid refined carbs like white bread, maida, white rice, noodles , pasta. Sugary drinks , trans fats , saturated fats , deep fried foods , animal proteins like red meat all need to be skipped. Tofu, moong dal, sprouts, homemade yogurts and ice creams are a good option- something which is easy on the stomach

You can enjoy occasional spinach and onion pakodas made in light oil along with your cup of tea to get the feel of monsoons. Roasted rice flakes and puffed rice, roasted nuts and black jamun are a source of the healthy snacks which you can enjoy.
